Department of Works

The Department of Works operates under the leadership of three Divisional Engineers based in the Central/Eastern, Northern, and Western Divisions. It is responsible for delivering professional advice, technical services, and the implementation of construction projects for various client ministries and departments.Key responsibilities of the Department include:

Construction and Maintenance Services

• Construction of civil works and public infrastructure
• Maintenance and operation of public buildings
• Electrical engineering services, including capital projects and routine maintenance
• Implementation and supervision of rural road construction projects.

Mechanical and Technical Support

• Supply, maintenance, and servicing of plant equipment, vehicles, and mechanical appliances for internal Ministry use
• Mechanical workshop services, including fitting, machining, boiler works, joinery, and plumbing under the Trade and Manufacturing Account

Professional and Technical Services

• Cost estimation and project costing
• Design and project planning
• Monitoring and supervision of construction projects
• Professional advice on building, mechanical, and electrical engineering matters

Special Operations

• Oversight of elevator and lift maintenance for government-owned buildings
• Management of rural government station power supplies in Vunisea, Lakeba, Rotuma, and Nabouwalu
