The Fiji Meteorological Service (FMS) is a people-focused centre of excellence dedicated to delivering world-class weather, climate, hydrological, and ocean services. FMS plays a critical role in safeguarding communities, supporting economic sectors, and contributing to global meteorological and climate science.

As Fiji’s Permanent Representative to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), FMS upholds the highest international standards and is a recognised leader in the region for meteorological and climate-related services.

Key Functions and Responsibilities:

Regional Leadership
  • Accredited by the WMO as the Regional Specialized Meteorological Centre – Tropical Cyclone Centre (RSMC-Nadi)
  • Responsible for tropical cyclone monitoring, forecasting, and advisories within the South Pacific region bounded by the Equator to 25º South and 160º East to 120º West
National Mandate and International Support
  • Serves as the National Weather Forecasting Centre for Fiji
  • Provides public weather services to Nauru, Kiribati, Tuvalu, Tokelau, and the Cook Islands
  • Delivers aviation meteorological services for Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, Cook Islands, Niue, Tuvalu, and Kiribati
Marine and Ocean Services

Issues marine weather bulletins and forecasts for the region from the Equator to 25oS, 160oE to 120oW—supporting the safety of maritime transport and coastal communities

Quality and Compliance

An ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System-certified provider for aviation and climate services, ensuring reliability, safety, and consistency

Climate and Hydrological Leadership
  • National repository for climatological and hydrological data, providing essential data for decision-making and research
  • Hosts the National Climate Monitoring and Prediction Centre, delivering seasonal outlooks and climate change information
  • Acts as Fiji’s national focal point to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), supporting global climate science and negotiations
  • Leads flood monitoring and advisories, contributing to national disaster risk reduction
