The construction of the Bua Suspension Bridge was officially launched by the Ministry of Public Works, Meteorological Services and Transport, under the leadership of Honourable Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau, during a groundbreaking ceremony held yesterday in Bua Lomanikoro.

This pivotal infrastructure project promises to transform the daily lives of the 600- to 800-person communities of Dalomo, Bua Lomanikoro, and Tiliva. Tropical Cyclone Winston destroyed the original bridge in 2016, leaving residents reliant on temporary foot crossings vulnerable to severe weather.

Speaking at the event, Minister Tuisawau emphasized the bridge’s significance as a “bridge of hope, progress, and connection,” underscoring the government’s commitment to resilient, climate-smart infrastructure supporting rural development.

The project is being rolled out in two phases:

  • Phase 1, which began on 29 May 2025, involves the construction of bridge towers and is set for completion by 23 July 2025.
  • Phase 2, pending funding, is scheduled to commence in August 2025 and finish by December 2025.

The total investment for the bridge is approximately $1.3 million, with Phase 1 budgeted at $740,497.00 and Phase 2 at $559,503.00. The Public Works Department (PWD) will lead construction efforts.

The bridge will facilitate safer and faster access to schools, farmlands, health services, and markets. It will also bolster local economic activity, particularly for farmers and fishermen, and contribute to reduced reliance on fuel-intensive travel.

“This project is more than steel and concrete; it represents our shared future. It reflects our unwavering commitment to deliver dignified infrastructure to all Fijians,” said Minister Tuisawau.

The ceremony was attended by traditional leaders, government officials, and members of the local communities, who expressed their appreciation for the long-awaited development.
